Problems with Petroleum in lip balm

You should avoid any lip balm containing petroleum or petroleum by-products. Most popular brands contain it, here are a few that do:
  • Carmex
  • Chapstick
  • Blistex
  • Vaseline Lip Therapy
Check out more info on this ingredient and why it does more harm than good...

- Provides temporary relief, but will eventually dry your lips out, making you apply more often.
- It isn't absorbed into the skin and keeps the lips from breathing, which can actually make lips more chapped.
- Petroleum by-products are made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource that may be contaminated with cancer-causing agents called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Also, ingesting too much of it (which is easy to do when you slather it on your lips during winter) can lead to upset stomach and diarrhea.
- The European Union has banned many petroleum jelly products, and experts are concerned they could be linked to cancer.

If you are using one of the brands listed above or another brand containing this ingredient you may want to toss it and try using a brand that contains only all natural ingredients like Allgreens Lip Balm.

*Allgreens lip balms are made with beeswax, cocoa butter, and other all natural ingredients, which work to protect your lips from the elements, without the health or environmental downsides.
